AFCON 2023: Burundi Beat Namibia, Next To Clash With Cameroon

In a thrilling match during the CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers (AFCON), Burundi emerged victorious over Namibia, securing their place in the final against Cameroon. The match, which took place on Matchday 5 in Group C, ended with a 3-2 scoreline in favor of Burundi.

The game started with an early goal from Burundi’s Bigirimana in the first minute, catching Namibia off guard. Bimeyimana quickly followed up with a goal in the 9th minute, doubling Burundi’s lead. 

Hussein then extended the Swallows’ advantage with a goal in the 19th minute. However, Namibia managed to reduce the deficit just before halftime when Peter Shalulile scored in the 41st minute. 

In the second half, Namibia’s team scored another goal through Rudiath in the 85th minute, intensifying the competition.

Despite their loss, Namibia remains at the top of Group C with five points. The defeat on Matchday 5 means that three teams in the group now have the same point total. Burundi, with four points, will face Cameroon, also with four points, in the final match of the qualifiers.

The victory for Burundi sets the stage for an exciting final between Burundi and Cameroon, where the winner will secure a spot in the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

In the AFCON 2023 qualifiers, Burundi secured their place in the final by defeating Namibia 3-2 in Group C. Burundi took an early lead with goals from Bigirimana and Bimeyimana, followed by Hussein extending their advantage. 

Namibia managed to reduce the deficit before half-time through Shalulile’s goal. However, Burundi held on to secure the victory. 

With this result, Namibia remains at the top of the group with three teams tied on 5 points. On the final day, Burundi will face Cameroon, both with 4 points, to determine the group winner.

In the qualifiers, Ghana, despite a goalless draw with Madagascar, are in a strong position with 9 points in Group E. 

Angola (2nd, 8 points) and the Central African Republic (3rd, 7 points) are competing for the final qualifying spot. 

Ghana’s coach, Chris Hughton, expressed concern about the team’s inability to score and emphasized the importance of winning the last game against the Central African Republic.

Additionally, Cameroon’s case against Gabon over qualification for the U23 AFCON was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This decision confirms Gabon’s qualification for the tournament, which will take place in Morocco from June 24 to July 8, 2023.

The president of the Ivorian Football Federation, Idriss Diallo, demanded more from the players following Côte d’Ivoire’s heavy defeat to Zambia. 

He stated that the loss marked the end of the test phase for coach Jean-Louis Gasset, and emphasized the importance of players’ good health, regularity at club level, commitment, and determination to defend the national flag. 

The president’s message implied a need for discipline and focused selections ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Côte d’Ivoire in January 2024.
