According to Kenyan officials, the husband of Olympic runner Agnes Tirop has been apprehended and will be charged with her murder after a nationwide manhunt was started and he was apprehended in the coastal city of Mombasa while attempting to exit the country, authorities said. Ibrahim Rotich was apprehended just before 9 p.m. Thursday, according to police, but only after crashing his car into a truck during a car chase with officers and eluding capture during the first attempt by officers to apprehend him about 460 kilometers (285 miles) from Mombasa, according to the police. Later, in the eastern city, he was apprehended and charged with murder.

A day after Tirop, a two-time world championship bronze medalist, was found stabbed to death at her house in the western town of Iten, more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Mombasa on the other side of the nation, Rotich was apprehended and arrested. The body of Tirop, 25, was discovered in a pool of blood with stab wounds in the belly, according to authorities.Rotich was soon recognized as the lead suspect, and police say he fled after making a distraught phone call to his family, confessing to them that he had done something terrible. Rotich was arrested and charged with murder.

Police claimed Rotich was arrested with another man he was traveling with and that he was in possession of Tirop’s cell phone at the time of his detention. According to the Directorate for Criminal Investigations, Rotich was being questioned at a police station and will be prosecuted for murder if he is found guilty. She was murdered by Rotich, who was estranged from Tirop at the time of her death, which took place in a customary Kenyan ceremony. Their families had persuaded them to make an attempt at reconciliation, and they were said to have met this week to do so.

At the age of 19, Tirop became the second-youngest athlete in history to win the World Cross-Country Championships in 2015. She was a rising celebrity in Kenya after winning the World Cross-Country Championships in 2015. She also won bronze medals in the 10,000 meters at the 2017 and 2019 global championships, and she finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics in her other events. She set a new world record for the women’s only 10-kilometer road race last month, breaking it in the process.

Among those who expressed outrage at her death were Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was one of many leaders to do so. Kenyatta, who is now in the United States on an official visit, described Tirop as a “Kenyan hero” and instructed police to track down her assailant. As a mark of respect for Tirop, the Kenyan track and field organization has suspended all of its competitions in the country for the next two weeks.
