Black Panther: Wakanda Forever becomes first film to reach 1 billion Naira in Nigeria

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a 2022 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Black Panther, became the first film to reach 1 billion Naira in Nigeria since its release in the country in November 2022.

FilmOne, the leading distributor of blockbuster films in Nigeria, and The Walt Disney Company Africa announced that the superhero film smashed its box-office record in Nigeria.

Moses Babatope and Kene Okwuosa, co-founders of FilmOne, reportedly said, “We are happy because of the incredible response that Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has received at the box office in Nigeria.”

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has received critical acclaim for its engaging story and cast. Moses Babatope and Kene Okwuosa have said that the film captivated audiences across Nigeria. They said in a statement, “The record-breaking performance of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is proof that the cinema industry in West Africa is alive.”

The filmmakers and cast of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also travelled to Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, to celebrate the film’s release in Nigeria. The film made history by becoming the first official African Marvel Studios film to be premiered in Nigeria.

In November 2022, Director Ryan Coogler, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke and Tenoch Huerta Mejía attended the black carpet premiere event in Nigeria.
