BRICS Summit: Historic Enlargement Welcomes Six New Members

Meeting at their summit in Johannesburg, the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) announced on Thursday a “historic” enlargement of the emerging countries’ bloc, with the incorporation of six new members, including Iran, beginning in January. Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, made the announcement that Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will also be joining the organization, the purpose of which is to strengthen the group’s influence around the world.

The President of China, Xi Jinping, praised this “historic enlargement” and forecasted a “radiant future” for the BRIC nations. Beijing, which is the bloc’s economic heavyweight, was in support of this expansion, which was the subject of the 15th summit, which started on Tuesday and will end this evening. The summit began on Tuesday.

No information was made public regarding the topics that were discussed, the assistance that was provided, or the criteria that were utilized in the decision-making process regarding the strategic choice of the new entrants. During a plenary session held on Wednesday, negotiations were held behind closed doors, as were some of the bilateral talks that took place.

Approximately forty countries from all across the world had submitted membership applications or showed interest in joining the organization. According to the “club of five,” which creates a quarter of the world’s wealth and brings together 42% of the world’s population, the growing influence of developing countries on the world stage is an indication of the growing influence of emerging countries on the world stage.

Tehran immediately celebrated the revelation as “a strategic success for the country’s foreign policy” on the social media platform X, which was formerly known as Twitter. Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, referred to what he called “an important moment” for his nation. In a message that he made on social media networks, he stated that “Ethiopia is ready to cooperate with all for an inclusive and prosperous world order.”

President Mohammed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates expressed his “respect for the vision of the British leaders” while commenting on the agreement’s reception in his country. Egypt expressed the same sentiments, stating that it was eager to “make the voice of the countries of the South heard. Egypt was not alone in this sentiment.

The Brics are a diverse group of nations that have come together to advocate for a more equitable distribution of power on a global scale, notably in relation to the dominance of the United States of America and the European Union. Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated that “we are moving towards a multipolar world,” and therefore “outdated” multilateral institutions need to be reformed so that they can reflect “today’s economic realities.”
