buhari accuses governors of stealing lg funds
Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Nigeria, has accused the governors of stealing LG (local government) funds. He has accused them of diverting allocations from the federation account.
The president attended an event hosted for members of the Senior Executive Course 44 (2022) of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. During the event, he accused a governor of misappropriating funds meant for local government. However, the president did not reveal the name of the government.
The president revealed that some governors would collect money on behalf of local councils in their states. He said that such a move could lead to corruption in the country.
The president reportedly said at the event, “If the money from the Federation Account to the state is about N100 million, N50 million will be sent to the chairman, but he will sign that he received N100 million. The governor will take the balance.”
On Wednesday, the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, said that 72 per cent of poverty in Nigeria was located in rural areas because the governors did not pay attention to those areas.
Reportedly, some governors reacted to Buhari’s accusations. They said that they were not among those diverting local government funds. Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom; David Umahi of Ebonyi State; AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State and Solomon Lalong of Plateau State reacted to Buhari’s accusations.
Reportedly, some Nigerians are suffering due to economic miseries. They are affected by fuel scarcity, insecurity and poverty. Some Nigerians also reacted to the lack of business opportunities in the country. They called on the government to improve the livelihood of people.
According to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics, over 65 per cent of Nigeria’s population are deprived of education, employment, living standard and security.
