Last year Africa’s gaming business grew nearly six times faster than the world average fuelled by demand for mobile entertainment including popular games like Candy Crush and Roblox.
The continent’s gaming community grew by 10% to 349 million gamers with smartphones accounting for 89% of income. ADG Technology Inc, a New York based mobile gaming publisher known as Carry1st and San Francisco based Newzoo LLC reported a 12% rise in sales to $1.8 billion from the previous year exceeding the global gain of 2.1%.
Africa has the world’s fastest expanding and most youthful population with tech savvy youth who have greater access to cellphones increasingly employing them to bridge service gaps. Consumer’s gaming experiences have improved as data costs have decreased, internet connections have become faster and dedicated gaming servers have been added.
Egypt had the highest gaming income last year, at $368 million followed by Nigeria at $300 million and South Africa at $278 million, according to the data. Eritrea and Niger emerged as the fastest growing countries while Equatorial Guinea and the Seychelles grew slowly.
