Decline in X global traffic can be challenging for Elon Musk

X Corp, formerly known as Twitter, has experienced a significant decline in user visits, affecting the popularity of the micro-blogging site. The decline in X global traffic can be challenging for Elon Musk, who purchased the social media platform in October 2022.

In September, social media platform X witnessed decline in user visits, which decreased X’s global rankings. Currently, social media platform X is in seventh position in global rankings.

According to data from SimilarWeb, in September, X’s global traffic decreased from 6.4 billion to 5.8 billion, which is a significant 10 per cent loss. This decline was reported in 83% of the 176 countries that accessed X social media platform in September.

According to Google, X searches have witnessed a decrease since Elon Musk took over the social media platform last year in October. X searches decreased from 14 million monthly searches to 11 million, marking the lowest figures since November 2018.

Venture Smarter said, “SimilarWeb traffic shows that Twitter is quickly losing traffic and has already slipped in global rankings. Since Musk took over, its popularity appears to be declining.”

Challenge for Elon Musk

X platform has struggled to retain some advertisers since the takeover. This situation can be challenging for Elon Musk. If X platform loses both users and advertisers, the revenue of the company can be affected.

U.S. ad revenue of X social media platform dropped by 78% in December 2022. The company has already seen a decrease in X daily active user count following Musk’s takeover of Twitter.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk fired a Twitter Engineer over declining view count. Musk held meetings with several Twitter employees to discuss his declining view count on X platform. In a meeting, he said, “I have over 100 million followers, and I’m only getting tens of thousands of impressions.” Later on, he told the engineer, “You’re fired, you’re fired.”

Elon Musk also fired 50 workers from X’s product division. Ever since Musk took over the social media company in October 2022 for $44 billion, he has fired half of Twitter’s workers.

What can X users expect?

Elon Musk said that X would launch two new tiers of premium subscriptions. Musk has adopted this strategy to boost X revenue by charging users and wooing back advertisers.

The social media platform has already started charging new users $1 in New Zealand and the Philippines as a test case.
