Dr Sultan Al Jaber’s Address At Africa Climate Summit Focus On Climate Goals

(UAE) and the managing director and group CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), spoke about climate change goals at Africa Climate Summit 2023. 

The Africa Climate Summit took place from 4 September to 8 September at Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. African presidents gathered in Kenya to discuss climate change and environmental agendas. 

Dr Sultan Al Jaber, who will preside over the summit in the United Arab Emirates in November, called for collaboration among world leaders to mitigate the effects of climate change.

‘We are not delivering the results’: Dr Sultan Al Jaber

As African Presidents gathered in Kenya in September, the President of the upcoming COP28 climate summit said, “The world is losing the race to meet its climate change goals.”

He told delegates at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in Kenya, “Collectively, we must admit that we are not delivering the results that we need.”

He called for further collaboration among African leaders to tackle the climate crisis. Dr Sultan Al Jaber, who is also the chairman of Masdar – Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, called for transformation of global climate financing.

$4.5 billion to finance climate projects in Africa

Dr Sultan Al Jaber said that the UAE was pledging $4.5 billion to finance and develop 15 GW of clean power in Africa by 2030. Dr Al Jaber called on African nations to come together to close the finance gap and complete climate projects. 

Reportedly, the African continent has renewable energy potential — 7,500 gigawatts of solar and 1,800 gigawatts of wind. A lack of adequate finance for tackling the climate crisis in Africa has become a massive problem for African countries.

African Development Bank group president Akinwumi Adesina lauded Dr Sultan Al Jaber for UAE’s continuous support to Africa in tackling the climate crisis. 

The UAE’s delivery of effective climate finance to Africa will help the continent to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change. 

Dr Al Jaber said at the Africa Climate Summit that Africa can become a defining force in low carbon sustainable growth in the coming years. He said that mitigating the effects of climate change was important. 

Highlighting Africa’s potential, the President of the upcoming COP28 climate summit said that the African continent could also become a hub for renewable energies.
