Former Orlando Pirates defender Rooi Mahamutsa’s return to professional football has been explained by his new club.
Having spent some time without a club since parting ways with Free State Stars at the end of the 2018/19 season, and following training stints with different top and lower league teams in recent weeks, Mahamutsa has been handed a lifeline after being signed by promotion-chasing Ajax Cape Town this week.
The Mother City-based GladAfrica Championship top of the table side confirmed the capture of the 38-year-old defender on Monday.
“Ajax Cape Town have roped in some experience to see out the final nine games of the 2019-20 GladAfrica Championship season. Veteran centre-back Rooi Mahamutsa has joined the Urban Warriors for the remainder of the season as the club sets its sights on a first league title,” stated Ajax on the club’s official website.
In joining the club, Mahamutsa said, as quoted on Ajax’s website, “The world works in a strange way; I’ve always admired Ajax as a club and as a brand for many years. At my age you wouldn’t think that I would have the honour of working with the best academy in Africa but here I am. To the Ajax faithful, I am looking forward to wearing your treasured red and white kit and I will fight for this title as if I came through your academy.”
The Urban Warriors are top of the second tier league log with 39 points after 20 matches, with their next fixture away at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Sunday, against Jomo Cosmos.
