ECOWAS, who are known as leaders from the Western Africa Bloc met Accra yesterday to discuss the political crisis in Guinea. The situation has been described by the chairman of the group as a burning issue in the region. After effective rounds of discussion, it was said that they will begin to impose penalties on the junta in Guinea unless it immediately releases deposed President Alpha Conde.

Ghana Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey mentioned that this extraordinary summit would review the delegation’s findings and decide the next steps for Guinea’s return to constitutional rule. With the single agenda of the summit, the authority will lay down a report of the ECOWAS high-level mission to Guinea.

Regional heads of state decided to freeze the financial assets and impose travel bans on Guinea’s military leaders and their relatives. They also insisted on the release of President Alpha Conde.

It is believed that all the soldiers behind the September 5 coup have ousted Conde because of concerns about poverty and corruption and because he was serving a third term only after altering the constitution to permit it.

Last week, during a meeting Guinea’s coup leaders, have set a number of conditions for releasing the deposed president. Sanctions are likely to be considered by the foreign minister of Ghana based on the report made by the delegators.

Although, the new Malian authorities’ pledge to hold presidential and legislative elections early next year has been undermined by their failure to meet various deadlines. It also includes the voter roll updates and the presentation of a new constitution.
