Motorists in Gauteng, a province in South Africa, will soon have to apply for new high-tech number plates for their vehicles. These new number plates will have several features to enhance security and efficiency.
They will be tamper-proof, meaning they cannot be easily removed or copied. Each plate will have a QR code that is linked to the owner of the vehicle.
This will allow authorities to easily identify the owner of a vehicle if needed. Additionally, the number plates will have a tracking system that will notify authorities when a vehicle crosses the border.
The decision to introduce these new number plates was made because Gauteng had run out of new numbers and letters to assign to vehicles. The new system aims to address this issue and improve security.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi stated that all motorists in the province must apply for the new number plates starting from April 1st. When motorists renew their license discs, they will also be required to get the new number plates installed.
The introduction of these high-tech number plates is part of the government’s efforts to combat crime, as vehicles are often involved in criminal activities.
The new plates will make it more difficult for criminals to use fraudulent or stolen vehicles. The tracking system will help authorities locate stolen vehicles and hold criminals accountable.
Lesufi emphasized that the new number plates are necessary because the province had exhausted all available combinations of letters and numbers for vehicle registration. The project is currently in a trial phase, with government vehicles already fitted with the new plates.
To avoid overcrowding at licensing offices, motorists will be required to apply for the new number plates whenever they renew their license discs. However, it will also be possible for individuals to get a new number plate without renewing their license disc.
Any vehicle from another province that remains in Gauteng for more than 30 days will also be required to switch to the new number plate system.
The introduction of new high-tech number plates in Gauteng is a positive step towards improving vehicle security and combating crime. The tamper-proof plates with QR codes linked to the owner of the vehicle will make it difficult for criminals to copy or remove the plates.
Additionally, the plates will notify authorities when a vehicle crosses the border, further enhancing security measures. This initiative is a necessary response to the shortage of new number and letter combinations for vehicle registration.
Thus, the implementation of these new number plates is expected to contribute to a safer and more secure environment for motorists in Gauteng.
