The M23 insurrection has announced a truce that would go into effect on Thursday, February 3rd 2025 as it advances farther into South Kivu after Goma fell. The decision was made in reaction to the deteriorating humanitarian situation, according to the M23.
On the other hand opinions are still divided in Goma. Some people are praising this action as it is a right step forward but others are really skeptical about the authenticity of it.
The mixed feelings of Goma residents after the M23 ceasefire announcement are evident. The move is regarded by some as a critical milestone toward the resumption of normalcy and ending the violence. Others however remain profoundly skeptical.
Most of them are so tired of this protracted conflict and the devastating toll it took on civilians. They dread that the announced ceasefire will not lead to concrete changes. They feel that even after such a declaration, the war will continue and the suffering will go on.
Even as people feel optimistic about peace, there is more uncertainty and skepticism over this hope because they want to see real improvement in their daily life.
Many people are waiting to see if the ceasefire will last or if the conflict will continue and the situation on the ground is very tense.
