The performance of African players in the Premier League this season has been mixed, with some notable highlights and areas for improvement. Traditionally, African players have excelled in the league, but this year has been more challenging.
One standout performer has been Thomas Partey of Arsenal. The Ghanaian midfielder has been a key player for the Gunners, providing solidity in midfield and contributing three goals.
Despite a setback after the World Cup, Partey remained one of the best midfielders in the league. Alex Iwobi of Everton and Jeffrey Schlupp of Crystal Palace also had commendable performances in midfield.
However, not all African players lived up to expectations. Edouard Mendy, the Chelsea goalkeeper and 2021 African champion, struggled with inconsistency and lost his place in the team.
Kalidou Koulibaly, another Chelsea player, made several mistakes in defense and was eventually relegated to the bench.
Overall, African defenders did not leave a significant impression in the league, with Serge Aurier of Nottingham Forest being one of the few exceptions.
Riyad Mahrez, the Algerian winger, had a decent season with Manchester City, contributing 11 assists and 5 goals as they secured the league title.
Abdoulaye Doucouré of Everton and Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest played crucial roles in helping their teams avoid relegation.
Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, despite having his least prolific season since joining the club, still managed to score 19 goals and provide 12 assists. His contributions were vital in Liverpool’s late surge to secure European qualification.
Bryan Mbeumo, the Cameroonian winger for Brentford, also had a notable season, scoring 9 goals and providing 8 assists as his team finished 9th in the league.
While there were some standout performances from African players in the Premier League, there is room for improvement.
The league has seen better seasons from African talents in the past, but individual performances varied this year.
As the next season approaches, fans will be eager to see how African footballers in the league will continue to make their mark.
