Despite things not working out in terms of game time, former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo has opened up on life at Bidvest Wits.
Mhlongo joined the Clever Boys in 2018, after a year in Port Elizabeth, where he plied his trade with Chippa United, who he joined from Pirates.
Being the oldest in the Wits goalkeeping department, Mhlongo has faced stern competition from goalkeepers, Ricardo Goss and Brandon Peterson.
The 29-year-old has made just two appearances in two seasons under Gavin Hunt, a statistic that would prove worrying for any goalkeeper, however Mhlongo maintains that he made the right decision by joining the Braamfontein-outfit.
“Most people would say I’m not getting any game-time, to be honest I did not work out initially as planned because I would have wanted to establish myself and start playing but I believe I’m at the right place and at the right team.
“Apart from not playing, the way the team welcomed me was very important. And it made me have a sense of belonging, because I was at Pirates my entire career basically so moving to Chippa and coming back to Joburg to join Wits, who were the rivals, I expected it to be hard to fit in at Wits but it’s been smooth sailing apart from the playing part,” Mhlongo told Wits’ official website.
Like the rest of his teammates, Mhlongo’s future is currently up in the air although his representative Mike Makaab of Prosport International has confirmed to the Siya crew that he expects to hold talks soon with new owners about Mhlongo’s long-term future.
