Ivory Coast Parts Ways with Head Coach Jean-Louis Gasset Amid Africa Cup of Nations Campaign
Ivory Coast, the host nation of the Africa Cup of Nations, has decided to part ways with head coach Jean-Louis Gasset. This surprising move comes as Ivory Coast awaits the outcome of other results to determine if they will advance to the last 16 as one of the best four third-placed teams. Despite winning one of their three group matches, Ivory Coast suffered a significant setback with a 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea.
In the event that Ivory Coast does progress to the knockout stages, former midfielder Emerse Fae will assume the role of interim coach. It has been reported that Gasset tendered his resignation following the loss to Equatorial Guinea, and the country’s football federation (FIF) confirmed the termination of his contract along with that of his assistant, Ghislain Printant. The FIF stated that the decision was made due to insufficient results.
Historically, Ivory Coast has only failed to advance from the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations once in their nine previous attempts. The final round of group games is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24th. South Africa will face Tunisia, Namibia will take on Mali in Group E, while Group F will conclude with matches between Tanzania and DR Congo, as well as Zambia and Morocco.
In other news related to the tournament, Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is expected to be sidelined for approximately 10 weeks due to groin surgery. Additionally, Ghana made a coaching change as Chris Hughton was sacked following their exit from the group stage.
