The former Côte d’Ivoire international goalkeeper has been tipped to join the club, which will be promoted back to Ligue 1 at the end of the 2023-2024 season.
A past player at Stade d’Abidjan, a club with whom he made a good impression, Gbohouo set his sights on golf after just one season. However, for the past 48 hours, the trend has been towards Africa Sport d’Abidjan, a team returning to the top flight of Ivorian football after years in D2. Sources agree that there is a very high probability that the 2015 African champion will defend the colours of Les Aiglons during the 2024-2025 season. The Ivorian last line of defence was spotted yesterday, Thursday 22 August 2024, in the stands at the Parc des Sports to watch the training session of his likely future team.
The situation of Sylvain Gbohouo is somewhat complex. Having returned to his homeland after a year’s suspension, the former Côte d’Ivoire international signed a season’s contract with Stade d’Abidjan. When his contract expired, he renewed with the Ivorian team. In the interim, however, he signed for a Saudi club. It was after he had signed that he informed the stewards. Given these circumstances, a letter of release from Stade d’Abidjan and papers from the Ivorian Football Federation are required. The officials are prepared to send the letter, but in return they are demanding financial compensation, which the Saudi club is unwilling to pay, as the player has already signed as a free agent. It was this that scuppered the transfer to Saudi Arabia.
However, the coming days will shed more light on Sylvain Gbohouo’s situation. Obviously, his profile is very appealing to the Aiglons, who have come to the Ivorian Ligue 1 to make a lasting impression. Given all the experience he has acquired, Gbohouo will certainly be of great comfort to Africa Sport.
