Jofra Archer, a Barbadian-born English cricketer representing England and Sussex, is set for competitive cricket for the first time in almost 18 months in South Africa T20 cricket league.
He is set to play two matches for MI Cape Town in the South Africa T20 cricket league, the SA20. The first game took place on Tuesday against the Paarl Royals. He took three wickets for 27 runs playing for MI Cape Town. The second match would take place on Friday against the Durban SuperGiants.
England’s managing director of men’s cricket, Rob Key, confirmed Archer’s return to cricket. Key reportedly said, “If he gets through SA20, we will pick him for the South Africa ODI (One-Day International) series, so he will go from four overs to 10 overs.”
His return after 18 months is great news for England. If Archer comes through his two matches in SA20, he can feature for England.
Archer played his last competitive game for Sussex in July 2021. Elbow problems and a stress fracture kept him in bed. The famous cricketer went into long and difficult rehabilitation to cure his stress fracture. He had to go through two elbow operations. Later on, he prepared for the SA T20 match with a warm-up match for England Lions in November 2022.
Former England superstar Kevin Pietersen appreciated Archer’s performance. He hailed his return as a big boost for England. He reportedly said, “For me, the biggest story is the return of Jofra Archer after nearly two years out with injury.”
Archer would also be part of the Mumbai Indians contingent for IPL (Indian Premier League) 2023, the men’s T20 franchise cricket league of India.
