Bola Tinubu will lead the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) into next February’s presidential election in Nigeria. The upcoming Nigerian presidential election will be held on 25 February 2023 to elect the President and Vice President.

Tinubu defeated 13 other candidates in the APC primaries. He won 1,271 APC delegates’ votes to run for the presidential election.

Who is Bola Tinubu?

Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu is a Nigerian politician. He is currently 70 years old. He has been national leader of the All Progressives Congress since the party’s formation in 2013. He served as the Governor of Lagos from 1999 to 2007.

Bola Tinubu’s early life

Tinubu was born on 29 March 1952 in Southwestern Nigeria. He completed his schooling in Nigeria. He studied accounting in the United States and worked there for several years. He completed his education at Chicago State University and Richard J. Daley College.

Bola Tinubu’s political career

Tinubu began his political career as a successful Lagos West senatorial candidate in 1992 under the banner of the Social Democratic Party. He was once forced into exile by military ruler Sani Abacha in 1994. He returned after Abacha’s death in 1998. In 1999, he stood for the position of Governor of Lagos and won the election.

Tinubu built a solid support base during his eight years as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. Under his tenure, Lagos grew its income through huge foreign investments. He became popular in Nigeria for his work and skills.

In the 2023 election, Tinubu will face stiff competition from former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who stands for the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

If Tinubu wins the 2023 election, he will have to deal with escalating insecurity across Nigeria. Insecurity has been a major challenge to the Nigerian government in recent years. The country needs to tackle poverty, hunger and unemployment.
