Organizations say West Africa is facing its worst food crisis in a decade

Eleven major international groups have issued a warning: West Africa is experiencing its greatest food crisis in a decade. 27 million people are starving, with 11 million more at risk if nothing is done by June, according to these humanitarian organizations.

“This is 40% more than last year at the same time, in the same period, and four times more than the numbers we used to see ten years ago,” says Assalama Dawalack Sidi, Oxfam’s regional director for West and Central Africa. This is why we really want to call on donors’ attention and governments’ attention because we know there are so many other crises here and there, but this crisis does deserve to be visible.

According to their research, drought and rising floods have affected food supplies, as have regional conflicts and the Ukraine war. Six of the 12 West African nations where Oxfam operates import wheat from Ukraine or Russia, which is no longer possible due to the Ukraine situation. And if they are unable to import wheat, this will result in a shortage of food in both countries, raising prices and making it extremely difficult for people to afford food, “Assalama Dawalack Sidi adds.
