South Africa’s Craig Fulton is now India’s men’s hockey coach

Craig Fulton, a former South Africa men’s field hockey international player and a former coach of the Ireland men’s national field hockey team, has been appointed as the new chief coach of the Indian men’s hockey team.

He has nearly 25 years of coaching experience. He has represented South Africa at the Summer Olympics and the Men’s Hockey World Cup. Fulton reportedly said, “It is an honour to be appointed in the role of chief coach for the Indian men’s hockey team.”

He replaced Graham Reid, an Australian field hockey player. Reid helped the Indian national hockey team to a historic bronze medal-winning show at the Tokyo Olympics. However, the Indian team’s bad performance at the World Cup led to the resignation of Reid. Indian team’s analytical coach Greg Clark and scientific advisor Mitchell Pemberton also resigned from the post after the Indian team’s poor outing at the 2023 World Cup.

When Fulton was the coach of the Irish men’s team between 2014 to 2018, the team qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics. He helped Ireland to win the bronze medal at the 2015 EuroHockey Championship. Under his guidance, the team also qualified for the 2018 World Cup. Fulton also won the FIH Coach of the Year award in 2015.

Fulton was also part of the Belgium team that won the Tokyo Olympics gold and silver at the 2023 World Cup in Odisha in India.
