The Ecrans Noirs film festival celebrates Africa’s cinematic richness

Africa – Fatima Boubakdi, a Moroccan film filmmaker, won first prize at the Ecrans Noirs film festival in Yaoundé, Cameroon’s capital. At the Ecrans Noirs, Glory Mununko was named best African actress, and Narcisse Wandji was named best Cameroonian film and best story.

“And the fact that we are receiving it at home, I mean the trophy, is doubly important for us,” said Cameroonian filmmaker Narcisse Wandji. Several unique prizes were also given out to a standing ovation. The Ecrans Noirs festival’s 25th edition included film screenings, discussions, and meetings with producers, directors, and actors.

One of the outcomes of these sessions was the need to assist African film. “I’ve had a lot of conversations with a lot of young people, and it breaks my heart because there aren’t a lot of things I can do to help them.” Film director Bouchaib El Messaoudi believes that the state should invest heavily in this industry. Thousands of people would attend the festival in normal circumstances.
