The Nigerian opposition party plans to challenge the election results

On Wednesday, the Labour Party of Nigeria issued a statement condemning the results of the country’s presidential elections, alleging they were not “transparent, free, and fair.” Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party, provided specific examples of acts of violence and voter intimidation during a briefing held on Wednesday. He also stated that the election was carried out “in clear violation of agreed and promised INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) rules and guidelines.”
“According to our assessment, the alleged outcomes do not satisfy even the most fundamental requirements for an open, democratic, and impartial election.” In addition to the most reprehensible attacks, violence, voter intimidation, and suppression, the election was conducted in obvious violation of the rules and guidelines that had been agreed upon and promised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed elucidated the situation.

Analysts say that the closely contested election changed Nigeria’s voting districts and led to results that are very different from those of previous elections. This is the first time that a president takes office with less than 50% of the vote, and it is also the first time that four candidates won over a million votes.

The leader of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said that he plans to contest the election results. “Please rest confident that we are resolved to combat the injustice that has been perpetrated on Nigerians by any and all legitimate and peaceful means. Even though it is painful, we beseech each and every one of you to please keep the peace and remain calm as our struggle and resolve for a new Nigeria is just getting started,” “added Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

A demonstration was conducted in which members of the Labour Party and members of civil society organizations voiced their disapproval of the work done by the Independent National Electoral Commission. They demonstrated while holding placards that stated “Save Our Democracy” and “Cancel the General Elections in 2023 now.”

Now, the parties have three weeks to file appeals against the results, but an election can only be overturned if it can be shown that the national electoral body did not mostly follow the law and did things that could have changed the outcome of the election.
