Tunisian President Kais Saied has named Ali Mrabet as his new health minister, according to the presidency. Mrabet is a military doctor and an epidemiologist and public health lecturer.
His appointment comes as Tunisia prepares to start a large-scale national vaccination drive on Sunday, with the goal of vaccinating as many people as possible across the country in one day.
The new minister “took the constitutional oath before the president, in accordance with article 89 of the Tunisian Constitution,” according to a statement released by the presidency.
Ex-Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi deposed Health Minister Faouzi Mehdi on July 20, citing an increase in COVID-19 cases in Tunisia. Saied fired Mechichi as Prime Minister and acting Interior Minister five days later, and the parliament’s activities were halted.
A huge outbreak of the Covid-19 sickness has occurred in Tunisia, causing hospitals to become overburdened. The number of infections has topped 600,000, with over 20,000 deaths.
