Furthermore, great political clout, economic stability and growth rate, and strong foreign alliances are all important aspects in determining a country’s power. The following is a list of top 10 most powerful countries in Africa in 2024.
The Arab Republic of Egypt is Egypt’s official name. It is Africa’s third most populous country and the Arab world’s most populous. Egypt has 105 million people and a nominal GDP of $4,028.42 per capita.

It is Africa’s strongest country, with a power index of 0.1869. It has an estimated 450,000 active military members and a $4,357 million defence budget.
With 60.14 million people and a nominal GDP of $5,121.04 per capita, the Republic of South Africa is one of Africa’s wealthiest and most powerful countries. The country has a power index of 0.4276, a total active military force of 66,500 people, and a defence budget of $2,911 million dollars.
Algeria’s population is estimated to be over 45 million people, with a nominal GDP per capita of $3,815.25. The country’s power index rating is 0.4724 as of 2021, with a defence expenditure of around $9,700 million and roughly 130,000 active military personnel.
With a population of 216 million people, the Federal Republic of Nigeria is the world’s ninth most populous country. The nominal GDP per capita in the country is $2,396.04. It has a power index of 0.5745. It has around 120,000 active military members and a defence budget of around $287 million.

Morocco is Africa’s fifth most powerful country, with an estimated population of 36.9 million people and a nominal GDP per capita of $3,368.473. It is ranked fifth on the list of Africa’s most powerful countries in 2022, with a power index of 0.8573. The country has roughly 310,000 active military members and a defence budget of $5,439 million.
The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has a population of 120 million people and a nominal GDP per capita of $826.95 dollars. With an estimated total active military personnel of 162,000 and a defence budget of $538 million, the country has a power index rating of 1.0798.

The Republic of Angola is Africa’s seventh-largest country, with a population of 33 million people. It has a power index value of 1.0931 and a nominal GDP per capita of $3,213.78. Angola has 110,000 active military personnel and a defence budget of $1,059 million dollars.
Libya is Africa’s fourth-largest country and the world’s sixteenth-largest country. It has a population of roughly 6.9 million people and a nominal GDP of $4,046.63 per capita. The power index value for the country is 1.3265. They have nearly 30,000 active military members and a defence budget of $3,475 million.
The Republic of Sudan is Africa’s third-largest country and the Arab world’s third-largest. It has a population of 45.7 million people. The country also has a total military force of 105,000 people, a nominal GDP per capita of $1,939.93, a power index rating of 1.3382, and a defence budget of $287 million.

It is the only country in North Africa that the Freedom House organisation has classed as “Free.” Tunisia’s population is predicted to be 11.8 million people, with a nominal GDP per capita of $3983.94. It also has roughly 36,000 active military personnel, a power rating index of 1.3664, and a defence budget of about $1,177 million.
