UAE’s Humanitarian Role in Sudan Recognized by UN

Of its $100 million pledge announced at the Paris International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighbouring Countries in April 2024, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has set aside $70 million. This major contribution emphasizes UAE’s will to solve the humanitarian situation in Sudan. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the World Health Organisation (WHO) among other UN agencies and humanitarian organisations will get the money.

The allocated aid seeks to meet Sudan’s most pressing needs including food and health services, livelihood support, emergency housing, and protection for women. The UAE’s larger plan is based on this all-encompassing support package, which helps to prevent the possibility of starvation and stop more degradation of the humanitarian conditions.

Her Excellentness The UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, underlined the country’s relentless support of the Sudanese people. She pointed out that the UAE has set up an air bridge for assistance delivery to Sudan and adjacent Chad in addition to promised financial support. Via 148 relief planes and a ship loaded with about 1,000 tons of essential relief supplies, this project has helped to transport 9,500 tons of food and medical supplies. The UAE also sent food supplies to Sudanese refugees in South Sudan and helped camps for displaced people in Chad.

International officials have generally acknowledged the UAE’s humanitarian contributions. Emphasizing that the $70 million allocation would increase lifesaving support for families and communities impacted by Sudan’s unparalleled humanitarian crisis, Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, expressed great thanks for the UAE’s support. Praising the UAE’s support as well, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain pointed out its vital part in giving underprivileged groups much-needed aid.

The UAE’s dedication to Sudan transcends only providing immediate relief. Two field hospitals created by the nation in the Chadian cities of Amdjarass and Abéché provide medical treatment to other needy citizens as well as Sudanese refugees. Since its founding, the Amdjarass hospital alone has seen 29, 378 patients.

Reiterating its demand for peace, the UAE has pushed for an instantaneous ceasefire and a peaceful end of the Sudanese war. Aiming to build a government run by people that satisfies the hopes of the Sudanese people for progress and prosperity, the UAE supports a comeback to the democratic process. By means of these initiatives, the UAE keeps on being essential in fostering stability and humanitarian help in the area.
