US and international community put political pressure on Farmajo to withdraw Extension

“After parliament extended the term of the outgoing president by two years, the Washington administration has made it clear that it will not support an extension without the support of Somalia’s political stakeholders, and a one-sided and parallel electoral process.” said Blinken.

The United States has strongly opposed the extension, promising to take action against the government. Not only the US, but there are challenges government policy on construction in order to save the country from political turmoil.

A statement from US Secretary of State John Kerry Blinken said: “Such actions will be highly divisive, undermine the federal system and the political changes that are central to the country’s development and international friendship, and divert attention from al-Shabaab.

The United States has expressed concern over the damage to Somalia’s democracy and pointed out that the Farmajo government is leading the country into political turmoil and insecurity that could result from an illegal extension.

“It will force the United States to re-evaluate our relationship with the Federal Government of Somalia, including its diplomatic and humanitarian assistance, and to consider all available resources, including “These include sanctions and visa bans, in response to efforts to undermine security and stability,” he said.

Joint statements by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), Canada, Denmark, the European Union (EU), Finland, France, Germany, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the United Nations have stated the international community’s position on the extension.

The statement said: “We have repeatedly stated that we will not support a parallel political process, unfinished elections, or new efforts to extend the previous term.

“The April 12th resolution undermines peace, security, and stability in Somalia and beyond. The resolution will also delay the holding of credible elections that the Somali people have been waiting for. ”

The international community also said in a statement that the implementation of the September 17 agreement was the best course of action available.

Therefore, they said, “we urge the leaders of the Federal Government and the Federal Member States to return to the talks as soon as possible to agree on a way forward. We call on all parties to exercise restraint, continue dialogue and refrain from unilateral actions that could provoke tensions. ”
