Zimbabwe: Journalist Granted 120 USD Bail

Last updated on September 11th, 2021 at 08:31 am

After over a month spent in jail, Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono used to be released on Wednesday on a 120 US dollar bail — upon his request being approved through a Justice of the Peace who stipulated that he is to refrain from posting on any social media networks while awaiting trial.

The lawyer for investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, Doug Coltart, shared a few words, “We are glad that our customer has now been granted bail, that is the primary reason for us, was to make positive he gets out. Of course, the reality that he has been incarcerated for all this time is a large injustice. These bail prerequisites are extraordinarily strict. We sense that they are overly stringent, they do even prevent his constitutional rights. Of course, that we disagree with.”

Chin’ono is facing fees of inciting public violence and used to be arrested in July at an anti-government demonstration — alongside with opposition baby-kisser Jacob Ngarivhume, who was additionally granted bail on the equal day.

Mr. Chin’ono had his three preceding requests for bail be denied and his attorneys claim that he was made to mix with different inmates by using prison authorities even after having fallen sick — exhibiting coronavirus-like symptoms.
