US Secretary of State and Kenyan President discuss conflict in DR Congo

The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Kenyan President Ruto recently discussed the long-running conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo during a phone call and urged an immediate ceasefire, according to the State Department.

M23 rebels recently made progress, marking the most serious escalation in more than a decade of the fighting. During the discussion, “both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to push for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis,” the department added.

Burundi is facing a difficult humanitarian situation as more than 40,000 people escaped into the country from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the UN said on Friday. Recently, more than 9,000 people crossed in one day.

This is one of the rarest instances of such a large number of people entering Burundi. The UN refugee agency has launched an emergency appeal for $40.4 million to offer crucial help to support the potential influx of 258,000 refugees into Burundi, Tanzania and Zambia.
