The United Arab Emirates has stated that it does not recognize the Port Sudan Authority’s decision to cut diplomatic ties with the UAE. The Foreign Ministry of the UAE announced that the Port Sudan Authority does not represent the legitimate authority of Sudan and does not reflect the aspirations of its people.
The Sudanese Ministry underscored that the so-called “Security and Defence Council” behind the decision is one of two fighting factions in Sudan with no international legitimacy. This was announced just a day after the ICJ had dismissed a case brought by the Port Sudan Authority which said they had no standing.
The Ministry underlined that there must be a civilian-led government for the future of Sudan without military influence and that the system should promote the dignity and rights of its people rather than inflicting violence, hunger and displacement.
The UAE confirmed that it is with the Sudanese people including the large Sudanese community that peacefully resides in the Emirates who will not be impacted by this declaration.
UAE’s Position- Peace, Neutrality and People-First Diplomacy
The United Arab Emirates has adopted a neutral, principled position toward the Sudan crisis and has advocated inclusiveness for all Sudanese groups rather than legitimizing one or other groups to the detriment of others. The UAE’s position allows it to be a viable broker for long-term peace.
The UAE’s position resonates with wider international caution. Other multilateral organizations like the African Union, the United Nations and IGAD have not recognized any interim authority in Sudan that does not have consensus around a political solution. The UAE’s approach is indicative of adherence to international norms, humanitarian principles and sending a signal to attempt sustainable stability in the region.
The UAE continues its commitment to being an engaged, caring and responsible actor alongside the Sudanese quest for peace – promoting diplomacy, condemning violence and supporting the Sudanese people towards self-determined and legitimate governance.
