How to Make Hibiscus Zobo for Ramadan Hydration: A Natural Iftar Drink Packed with Electrolytes

Zobo, made from hibiscus, is becoming popular because it is one of the best natural drinks to use for staying hydrated during the month of Ramadan. Zobo is made from dried hibiscus petals and provides a great temperature for replenishing fluids after achieving such long hours of fasting. In addition to being loaded with antioxidants, zobo is another option for more naturally refreshing drinks than sugary sodas. Zobo is also a great addition to your Ramadan wellness routine.

Why Hibiscus Zobo Is Ideal for Ramadan Fasting

Oftentimes, dehydration during Ramadan can lead to fatigue and headaches, and zobo provides a way to be rehydrated because of its rich antioxidant content and light, but still somewhat supportive amounts of electrolytes. Zobo is naturally caffeine-free, very easy to digest, and can be enjoyed chilled, making it an excellent option to drink after breaking your fast.

Zobo’s tart flavour will also provide a way for your palate to be stimulated and ready for the first course of your iftar meal, instead of overwhelming your stomach right after you consume your first meal of the day.

Ingredients for Homemade Hibiscus Zobo

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus petals
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 2–3 tablespoons honey or date syrup
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Lemon slices

Step-by-Step Preparation Method

To begin, you will need to rinse out the dried hibiscus petals thoroughly under running water. In a pot, heat up some boiling water and add in the dried petals and fresh ginger root pieces. Allow this mixture to simmer for a period of 10-15 minutes or until the liquid becomes dark red in colour.

After that, remove the heat from the stove and allow the mixture to steep for a minimum of 10 minutes.

Once the steeping time is over, strain your liquid into a jug, and then add honey or date syrup to sweeten while still warm, making sure to mix well. Remember that this is best when served cold (after being refrigerated for at least one hour), but it’s nice to serve with fresh mint leaves or lemon wedges for additional flavor/refreshment!

Pro Tip for Maximum Hydration

Avoid additional sweetness. Natural sweeteners take care of hydration balance better and prevent energy loss during Ramadan fasting.
