LAGOS: Nigeria’s Independence Day has a second headline this year, and it comes with gloves. The Chaos in the Ring Carter Efe vs Speed Darlington fight takes place tonight, October 1, at the Balmoral Hall of the Federal Palace Hotel on Victoria Island, with live coverage on SuperSport.
Two Fighters With Something to Prove
Balmoral Group Promotions, which runs the series, announced the bout after a challenge Speed Darlington threw out following Carter Efe’s last win. It is the first time the two have met in a boxing ring, though both are familiar faces on Nigeria’s celebrity boxing circuit.
Carter arrives as the scene’s unofficial king. On May 1, at Chaos in the Ring 4, he beat Portable by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring it 30-27. He was reported to have won a N50 million prize from businessman Emeka Okonkwo. Portable had beaten both Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington before that night.
Speed, a rapper and social media personality, has something to prove. In April 2025 he failed to answer the bell for the second round against Portable, and he has spent months talking about a comeback. He told Carter he was a very different opponent, and the October 1 date turned that talk into a contract.
The Build-Up Gets Personal
The build-up has been loud. At a heated face-off, Speed promised in Pidgin to settle things with a beating. Carter asked why his rival was standing so close to a bouncer and told him to send the security away. He said he would show he is a 24-year-old. Carter has also named a comment Speed allegedly made about singer Burna Boy as his main reason for wanting to win. He says he wants to beat Speed to the point of embarrassment.
More Than One Fight on the Card
The night is bigger than one fight. Phyna and Nkechi Blessing, who traded insults online, meet in a celebrity bout of their own on the same card. As of mid-September, organisers had not released the full undercard or ticketing details.
The promoters have pushed the series beyond one hall. Chaos in the Ring 4 was run with AK Promotions, the company of former world champion Amir Khan, and the series has drawn international streaming interest. That is a long way from the early days, when celebrity boxing was treated as a side show.
It also makes tonight’s stakes simple. A win keeps Carter at the top and widens his lead over everyone who wants his title. A win for Speed would wipe out his earlier loss and reopen the whole division. Either way, the beef ends in the ring tonight.
