A London courtroom delivered a verdict that will split opinion among fans for days. Chris Brown avoids jail after admitting he beat a music producer with a bottle in a Mayfair nightclub, a case that has trailed the singer for nearly three years.
The sentence
On Monday, Southwark Crown Court handed the 37-year-old an eight-month sentence, suspended for a year. He had pleaded guilty in July to affray over the February 2023 attack at the private club Tape, and faced up to three years. Video shown in court captured Brown striking former friend Abraham Diaw twice on the head with a tequila bottle before being pulled away.
Why the judge held back
Judge Tony Baumgartner called the use of a glass bottle aimed at the head plainly dangerous, with a real risk of worse injury. Even so, he ruled prison was not warranted because of Brown’s guilty plea and mitigating factors such as stable employment and charity work. He noted Brown’s earlier convictions but pointed to a clean record in recent years. Diaw left hospital with head and knee injuries. Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also admitted affray and received a four-month suspended sentence.
Fans, apologies and a long shadow
Defence lawyer Sallie Bennett-Jenkins said Brown offers a profound apology and stressed the incident lasted under 20 seconds. Prosecutors, however, said he moved first and played the leading role. Outside court, fans who travelled from as far as Italy and the Netherlands cheered him, though one voice shouted that violence is not okay.
African fans know Brown well. He opened Morocco’s Mawazine Festival back in 2016, and his music remains a staple at parties from Lagos to Johannesburg. His Grammy wins, including one for “11:11 (Deluxe)” in 2025, sit beside a troubled legal history stretching back to his 2009 assault conviction. Free on bail of five million pounds before sentencing, he is now free to return to touring, with a suspended sentence hanging over him for the next twelve months.
