Burundi Burundi Burundi– At least 38 detainees are believed to be dead and 69 critically injured after a fire broke out in the main jail in Burundi’s capital, Gitega, on Tuesday. The occurrence was confirmed by the country’s vice president. Many of the inmates were still sleeping when the incident occurred at 4:00 a.m. The incident was caused by an electrical short-circuit at the almost century-old prison, the interior ministry stated on Twitter.

According to photographs published on social media, the prison was engulfed in flames, and the bodies of men were sprawled on the floor. One inmate told AFP that “we started shouting that we were going to be burned alive when we saw the flames climbing really high.” However, the cops refused to open our rooms’ doors, claiming that “these are the orders we have received.”

“I’m not sure how I got out,” he asserted, “but there are detainees who have been completely burned.” Emergency personnel were late reaching the scene, according to a police source, with the first fire truck arriving two hours after the fire started. Those with the most serious burns were taken to the hospital, some in police pick-up trucks, according to witnesses, while those with minor injuries were treated on the scene.
