In a major drive to boost healthcare on the African continent, the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) is to collaborate with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health to stage a high-level ministerial meeting focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Universal Health Coverage (SRH and UHC). The event slated on January 13, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Addis Ababa seeks to reinforce efforts towards achieving Africa’s Agenda 2063 goals including confronting major health challenges across the Region.
The event is a critical milestone that would give birth to a major event of the announcing of the “24 Priority Medical Products” initiative and “Road Map for Regional Manufacturing in Africa“. These projects are meant to reduce Africa’s reliance on foreign medicines and make it more self-sufficient for things such as maternal, newborn, and reproductive health products. The A2DSRH Programme spearheaded by AUDA-NEPAD has been the main stream SRH in Universal Health Coverage through harmonizing of policies and regional capacity building.
In the context of high maternal mortality rates and limited access to contraception across Africa, the ministerial event is to be placed on providing successful SRH models and utilizing the continent’s demographic dividend for sustainable growth.
