After months of talks in Qatar, the signing of the Chad peace agreement is scheduled

On Monday, the head of Chad’s military government, Mahamat Idriss Deby, is due to sign a peace pact with rebel factions that took part in the Doha discussions with the Chadian authorities. These parties were represented at the meetings in Qatar. A meeting took place between the ruler of Chad and his host, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who supports a “complete national reconciliation” in the Sahelian state. This meeting took place prior to the signing.

According to sources within the diplomatic community, the AFP news agency stated that approximately forty rebel factions might sign the treaty. Even after months of negotiations, it is still unknown whether the biggest rebel organizations in the country, Front for Change and Concord in Chad, will sign the deal. These two groups have been in contact with one another. People think that the French acronym FACT stands for the rebel group that killed Chad’s longtime leader, Idriss Deby Itno, in the year 2021.

As part of the agreement, the transitional authorities in Chad and the various rebel groups are expected to agree to a cessation of hostilities. The signatory rebel groups have agreed to make a commitment to participate in a national dialogue, which is scheduled to begin on August 20. Over 1,300 people are expected to go to the meeting in NDjamena. They will include people from civil society, unions, opposition groups, and the ruling party.

The participants need to make plans for the organizing of the presidential election that will take place in October. If successful, these elections will put an end to the authority of the Transitional Military Council, which is led by Mahamat Idriss Deby, who is 38 years old. France places a high priority on Chad as a vital partner in the Central and West African region. Chad is a participant in the anti-terrorism force known as G5 Sahel.
