Cameroon set to release prisoners to prevent spread of Coronavirus

Last updated on September 11th, 2021 at 02:54 pm

President Paul Biya announced that he will take steps that will lead to the release of thousands of prisoners to lighten overcrowded correctional facilities.

However, the president explained that separatist fighters, officials jailed for corruption, and those jailed for sexual crimes or even those that affect state security are excluded from the amnesty.

The presidential decree does not specify how many people will benefit from the order, and the Justice Ministry is now examining the files of prisoners.

According to calculation, at least 10,000 prisoners can be released, a third of those held in correctional facilities built for just 9,000 inmates
