The Chadian government is requesting that Africa be given the opportunity to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Awatif El Tidjani Ahmed Koiboro, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Chad, spoke before the United Nations on Friday and said that it will “address a historic injustice” and support countries in the G5 Sahel.
She stated the following regarding the reform of the Security Council, which is the body responsible for maintaining peace and international security: “On the reform of the Security Council, the body responsible for peace and international security, Chad once again urges member states to move from rhetoric to action in order to achieve the said reform and correct the historic injustice towards the African continent, which excludes it from full and equal participation in this body.”
Already, Nigeria has made the demand that Africa be granted a total of two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council. However, Chad’s anxiety is heightened in light of Mali’s recent decision to resign from the G5 Sahel.
According to Ms. Koiboro, “concerning the internal situation of the G5 Sahel, which recorded the exit of the sister Republic of Mali, we lament this withdrawal.” Because Mali was one of the first countries to join this organization, it is called “it is positioned appropriately at our side.” Without working together against terrorism and pooling our resources, we will not be able to defeat it, nor will we be able to stabilize or develop the Sahel “We are holding out hope that our brothers from Mali would rethink their decision and come back to work with us in our shared organization. They can always find a warm welcome at the door of the G5 Sahel, which is always wide open.”
The United Nations and the African Union made a commitment in December of the previous year to collaborate with the Group of Five Sahel States and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen governance and security.
