Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is back in Zimbabwe in time for the Zanu PF annual conference scheduled for 11 to 16 December in Goromonzi.
He returned to Zimbabwe earlier today and was welcomed at the airport by a delegation of Chinese people and some relatives.
With his return imminent, a Zanu PF insider commented earlier this week:
The conference will be the ideal stage for Chiwenga to uplift his loyalists in the party, and show that his faction can still mount a significant challenge in the broader context of his political ambitions.
In a big way, the conference will be an opportunity for him, if he makes it, to re-assert his influence within the party and the military.
Chiwenga is reported to have ambitions to succeed Emmerson Mnangagwa as the country’s president. For his part Mnangagwa is reported to have reshuffled his cabinet recently to consolidate his hold on power and reduce Chiwenga’s influence.
