Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that defender Diogo Dalot might miss the rest of the season due to a calf injury.
Dalot came on as a substitute during United’s 1-0 loss to Wolves last Sunday. Amorim had tried to manage his fitness for the final games. But now, Dalot has picked up a muscle injury that could end his season early.
“Diogo Dalot is out. He has a calf muscle issue and won’t be available for the next matches,” Amorim told reporters before United’s game against Bournemouth.
Dalot has played 51 games for United this season in all competitions, missing only one game due to suspension. When asked if Dalot’s season was over, Amorim said, “It’s possible, but we will check him week by week. He works very hard and can recover quickly.”
Dalot’s injury is another big blow for United. The team has an important Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao coming up.
United are currently 14th in the Premier League. This could be their worst league finish since they were relegated in 1973-74. They have already recorded their lowest points total in Premier League history. A major squad rebuild is expected at the end of the season, no matter what happens.
Amorim said he has already identified players he may sell in the next transfer window. “Yes, I have a clear idea. But things can still change in the final games,” he said.
When asked about signing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, Amorim refused to comment.
Despite United’s struggles, Amorim believes players still want to join the club. “It’s Manchester United. Players still dream of playing here,” he said.
United must win the Europa League to qualify for Europe next season.
