At a meeting in Cairo on Monday, Japan’s foreign minister exchanged views with his Egyptian counterpart. In a statement released by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Toshimitsu Motegi and his delegation discussed with Egyptian officials “methods of strengthening bilateral relations, as well as exchanging visions on the most prominent regional issues of common concern.”
During a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Motegi said, “We expressed our concern about the current situation in Afghanistan and agreed to work with Egypt, which has influence over the Islamic world, to ensure that this issue does not become a factor in further turmoil.”
During the meeting, the two countries agreed on the importance of finding political solutions to the crises that have engulfed the region.
They reaffirmed the importance of ongoing consultation and coordination between the two sides in various international forums, particularly in the context of joint preparations for the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), which will be held in Tunisia next year.
In an earlier meeting, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi requested that his greetings be conveyed to Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who was present. Sisi also congratulated the people of Japan on their successful hosting of the most recent Olympics in the city of Tokyo.
