Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink, an American neurotechnology company that develops implantable brain-computer interfaces, has received approval from the United States (US) regulators to test its brain implants in people.
On Thursday, Elon Musk’s brain-implant company Neuralink received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a federal agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services, to launch its first-in-human clinical study.
Neuralink said in a post on Twitter, “We are excited to share that we have received the FDA’s approval to launch our first-in-human clinical study. This is the result of incredible work by the Neuralink team in close collaboration with the FDA.”
In December 2022, Musk said that the startup was launched to conduct a clinical study in order to enable human brains to communicate directly with computers. He also gave a presentation about the company. At that time, Musk said, “We’ve been working hard to be ready for our first human (implant).” During the presentation, Neuralink showed several monkeys “playing” basic video games through their Neuralink implant. Product prototypes were implanted in the skulls of monkeys.
Elon Musk, who works all day to run his companies, has been making ambitious predictions about his various companies. Since 2019, he has been predicting that his medical device company can start human trials of a brain implant to treat paralysis and blindness. Musk claimed that implants can restore vision and mobility in human beings who had lost abilities.
Musk said, “We would initially enable someone who has almost no ability to operate their muscles. We are confident that it is possible to restore full body functionality to someone who has a severed spinal cord.”
Earlier this month, Elon Musk named Linda Yaccarino as the new Twitter CEO. Musk said he would act as an executive chairman and chief technology officer (CTO) of Twitter.
