Ghana’s opposition candidate for president, John Mahama, prevails

The major opposition party in Ghana elected John Dramani Mahama, the country’s former president, to be its candidate for the presidency in the election scheduled for 2024. Over the course of the weekend, delegates to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) cast their ballots in a series of primaries to elect a candidate for both the presidential and legislative elections.
It was decided that Mahama was the clear victor when he received 98.9 percent of the vote, while his opponent, the former mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, only received 1.1 percent of the vote. The majority of political pundits predicted that the former president would win the primary election due to his extensive experience and influential position inside the opposing party.
“He has been tried and tested and comes with a lot of experience,” said Kwame Asah-Asante, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana. Many of the more than 355,000 NDC party delegates who gathered at 401 polling locations across the nation over the weekend for the election shared this trust in Mahama. These voting centers were spread out across the country.

“I feel that if the NDC is elected to power, most of the things that we Ghanaians want can be accomplished for us by the NDC. Consider the responsibility of looking after our children.” According to marketer Kafur Addo, “the other side promised us a great deal, but they were unable to fulfill their promises.” According to him, he is confident that the NDC will make good on the commitments it has made to voters if it is elected to power.
The primaries are taking place at a time when Ghana is engaged in discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding a bailout of $3 billion to assist the country in overcoming an economic crisis. Additionally, Ghana is dealing with a growing jihadist threat as a result of a conflict in neighboring Burkina Faso. The analysts feel that Mahama will likely capitalize on the economic situation that the country is facing in his campaign for the presidency, and the delegates have faith in his abilities.
“I believe in John Dramani Mahama. He has previous experience serving in such a capacity. He formerly served in the role of vice president, and in addition to that, he is an effective communicator. There is absolutely no way that the current president can help us in any way,” an entrepreneur by the name of Joshua Rockson remarked. We have given him the benefit of the doubt for the past eight years, but he has not improved. However, if we have John Dramani Mahama on our side, he can turn things around for us. Because of this, we have faith in him. Because of this, we have come to cast our votes in his favor.
In November, the ruling party of currently serving President Nana Akufo-Addo will hold its own primaries. The general election for the presidency is set to take place on December 7, 2024.
