South African singer Zahara died at the age of 36. South Africa’s sports, arts and culture minister, Zizi Kodwa, announced her death. The sudden demise of the singer shocked the entire world. Her death was also confirmed by her manager, Oyama Dyosiba.

What happened to South African singer Zahara?

On December 11, South African singer Zahara, aged 36, passed away. She was hospitalized with alcoholism. She was reportedly suffering from liver disease. 

In 2019, her sister said, “If (Zahara) continues drinking, she is going to die … We are making sure that there is always someone around her to monitor her.”

Who is Zahara?

Bulelwa Mkutukana, known by her stage name Zahara, was a famous South African singer, songwriter and guitarist. She was known as “Afro-soul.”

She was a self-taught guitarist who gained international recognition with her debut album, Loliwe, in 2011. Her debut album won the Album of the Year award at the South African Music Awards.

Her last album Nqaba Yam was released in 2021. Her second album, Phendula (2013), produced three chart-topping singles. Her fourth album, Mgodi (2017), was her best-selling album in South Africa. 

In her career, she had won 17 South African Music Awards, 3 Metro FM Awards, and 1 Nigeria Entertainment Award. She was also named on the 2020 list of the BBC’s 100 Women. 

In 2021, the singer appeared as a guest judge on the 17th season of Idols South Africa. Her album Nqaba Yam peaked at number 1 on iTunes in the same year.
