Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling’s future is now uncertain, with new manager Enzo Maresca casting doubt over whether the England winger will remain in the Blues’ squad this season.
The absence of Raheem Sterling in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat by Manchester City has caused a stir, but the manager is playing for time and there is no intention of leaving Sterling out: ‘I don’t know exactly what the situation is. Suffice to say that the decision not to play Sterling is purely technical. We will probably sit down and clarify the situation later, but that’s all there is to it. All the players are part of Chelsea at the moment. For as long as they’re here, we’ll try to use them, but this decision is nothing more than a technical consideration. Raheem Sterling is what I want, but I also want the 30 players we have. However, there isn’t room for all of them. Some of them will have to leave,’ explained Enzo Maresca.
A spokesperson for Sterling said: “Raheem Sterling is contracted to Chelsea Football Club for the next three years.
“He returned to England two weeks early to conduct individual training, and has had a positive pre-season under the new coach, who he has developed a good working relationship with.

Sterling has spent the previous two years at Chelsea since arriving from the Citizens in a £47.5million deal.
Manchester United’s Sterling joined Chelsea in 2022 and He has chipped in with 19 goals and 12 assists in 81 matches in all competitions.
However, the 29 year-old could be the next victim of Chelsea’s bloated squad, which currently numbers 42 players.
