Jacob Zuma’s Political Comeback: A Divided Figure Takes Front Stage Again

Michael Gedleyihlekisa Once more creating ripples in South Africa’s political scene is the mysterious and divisive former president of the nation, Jacob Zuma. Before the next general elections, Zuma has become a major participant despite multiple corruption accusations and scandals during his term.

Zuma is regarded by some South Africans as a liberator and advocate of the underprivileged, but by others as dishonest and unfit for office. Still, it is impossible to overestimate his impact, especially in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), his own province, where he has considerable popularity. Zuma has backed the upstart uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, which is aiming to take on the African National Congress (ANC), in advance of the elections. The MK is rising and ANC support is declining, thus Zuma’s possible kingmaker role is very real.

Though some observers think Zuma’s popularity might result in big wins for the MK, others are dubious about his broad appeal outside of the ANC. All the same, as the elections get closer, the political environment in South Africa is changing and uncertainty is reigning.

Because KZN is becoming a major battleground, Zuma’s power in the province may determine how the elections turn out and how coalition politics in the nation develop in the future. There is going to be a dramatic confrontation with far-reaching ramifications as long as Zuma and the ANC maintain hostilities.

Even with the controversy surrounding his legacy, Zuma and his allies are unwavering in their pursuit of political power, and his opponents are afraid of his rising to prominence again. Jacob Zuma is looming big as South Africa gets ready for a new chapter in its political history.
