Mine Crumbles and kills 8 miners in Zambia!!

Zambia has been currently dealing with tragic doom at the mining sites due to the unauthorised mining company. Here are the lists of those horrendous incidents that took place in Zambia this year.

  • Lusaka – 9 miners died (August)
  • Chongwe – 8 workers, loaders (August)
  • Mumbwa – 12 miners died (October)

The consecutive disaster signifies the inability of the authorities to strengthen their regulations against the unauthorised mining to protect the lives of workers who work in the most dangerous ambience. 

Chingola Collapse

Several fatal slump took place in many places of Zambia which includes Mumbwa, Lusaka and Chongwe which consumed many lives of informal miners. Following that, on October 31st, 2024 at Chingola a heap of earth crumbled on the informal miners who were working at the open pit copper mining. The Provincial Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba informed that two miners had survived and still one is missing. Amidst the eight victims who died at the collapse, six of them were from the same family. They were not even employees of the mining company and it is said that they came and started to dig for copper without permission. The people of Zambia states that the loss of lives in such indifference really causes pain to their family and the inability of the respective authorities.

Zambian President’s Comments over the present and past incidents

The Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said that “the number of miners who had died in accidents was ‘unacceptable’”.
