On Friday, November 8th the biggest hospital in Maputo announced that clashes with thepolice on Thursday resulted in the deaths of at least three persons in the capital ofMozambique. It also added that 66 people had been hurt during the police clashes.The military of Mozambique has been sent in as a result of protest being escalated moreseriously.Venancio Mondlane, an independent candidate supported by the Podemos party has beenaccused in the polls on October 9 of electoral fraud. This became a cause for the protest.As a result of the protests that started in late October, Amnesty International claimed onWednesday, November 6th that at least 20 people had died. A week of protests endedThursday, November 7th according to the lawmaker who came in second based on disputedresults.In Maputo, thousands of protesters blocked highways and started fires during the stressfulday. Police and government gave a harsh response to the protest by using rubber bulletsand tear gas to control the public.The National Elections Commission was asked by the Constitutional Council earlier thisweek to provide an explanation for differences in the total number of votes cast in the threeelections that were conducted last month.Frelimo’s current president, Filipe Nyusi has once again stated that he is open to discussionand cautioned about the protest’s potential negative economic effects.
