New Durbanville’s Groot Phesantekraal Mall Opens in Cape Town: Top Shops, Size & Key Features

One of Cape Town’s oldest, Durbanville has welcomed a major retail landmark, the Groot Phesantekraal View shopping centre, on 24 July 2025. Developed by Abland with a R1 billion investment, the new 30,000 sqm mall on the corner of Okavango and Klipheuwel Roads will change the landscape of Cape Town.

Combining contemporary retail with neighborhood design, the centre boasts more than 40 stores, anchored by leading national brands Checkers, Woolworths, Dis‑Chem, Clicks, Mr Price, Spar and Planet Fitness. Shoprite opened five new stores – Checkers Supermarket, Checkers Little Me, PetShop Science, Checkers Outdoor, and Uniq by Checkers – creating 146 new jobs in the local community. Along with the international brands McDonald’s and KFC, there are local options, including Wimpy, Bossa, Bootleggers, and The Daily Coffee Company.

Built for Growth: Community and Economy

The mall is designed to cater to Durbanville’s population of families and professionals addressing the increased demand for convenient suburban living while not sacrificing heritage. As it sits at the entrance to the Cape Winelands, we’ve endeavored to reflect the local character while also providing the convenience of modern retail assets like grocery, fashion, homeware, fitness and pet supply.

The development will enhance local property values, provide more convenience and entice residents from the surrounding area, ultimately making Durbanville a regional retail destination.

Abland’s Retail Expansion in South Africa

Groot Phesantekraal View is one of three prominent 30,000 sqm Abland mall developments that have recently been initiated, following Parkdene Boulevard’s completion in Benoni (32,000 sqm; R700 million redevelopment) and the planned Mopane View Retail Mall in Soshanguve.

All three developments are aimed at under-zoned suburban areas and have a retail-led community focus through employment, development and social engagement.
