Nigeria Feels No Remorse Destroying Near Expiration 1 Million Vaccines Doses

Nigeria -While Nigeria destroyed a huge one million lot of expired Astra Zeneca vaccines, it happily received the ones donated by the US too. The skepticism over vaccine efficacy has forced the continent to the brink of disaster as the new variant spreads and the masses were refusing to get themselves vaccinated.

The vaccines were destroyed as they were invariable discarded or low shelf-life doses being sent as free doses to the continent. The government decided it would not accept any doses with a low shelf life anymore.

According to the head of the Nigerian National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib accepted the donations with the intention of protecting its citizenry but later released that some doses had “nearly reached its expiry date. So actually, for example, some of these vaccines came in with shelf lives of about 4 weeks.”

It is worth noting that the continent has had no facility to produce their own vaccines and has therefore heavily depended on donated ones only. However, the vaccination urgency has been forced in by various leadership heads across the continent. Africa was the first to encounter the Omicron variant. Vaccination is now rapidly improving in the most populous country in Africa, which intends to fully vaccinate 55 million of its 206 million citizens before February 2022. Currently, only 2% of the population is fully vaccinated.

National Food and Drug Administration Director Professor Mojisola Adeyeye said they have been able to test the vaccines and “are one of the few agencies in Africa that test our vaccine before use”. Donors have already been informed of the low shelf life and subsequent disposal.

As of now, only 2 percent of the Nigerian population has been vaccinated. It is sad but true that most developed countries prioritized their own and then sent off only near to expiration vaccine doses under the Covax scheme to the African continent. Africa has been seeking high efficacy vaccines like those made by Pfizer and Moderna. It has now received a huge lot of Moderna vaccines in Nigeria, reports confirmed.
