Amid accusations of fraud and violence, Nigeria’s ruling party clinched wins in two out of three states during the recent gubernatorial elections. These polls, known for their contentious nature due to the expansive powers of governors, witnessed fatalities and disputes.
Despite a sizable security presence, unrest marred the elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states. Tragically, three deaths occurred, and an Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) official was kidnapped, adding to the nation’s election tumult.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victories in Imo and Kogi states, reaffirming its hold. In Imo, incumbent Hope Uzodinma won with a substantial lead, while Kogi saw Ahmed Usman Ododo’s triumph. However, in Bayelsa, Douye Diri of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) retained power.
Low turnout in some areas was reported due to fears of violence, discouraging Nigerians from voting. The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) highlighted concerns over violence and reports of vote-buying practices, notably using rice as an incentive.
The electoral commission faced criticism for delayed result postings and technical glitches, intensifying allegations of potential electoral fraud. Despite reassurances of ensuring free and fair voting, doubts lingered, echoing past concerns and controversies.
Tragic incidents, including a kidnapping and voter disenfranchisement due to a boat accident, marked the aftermath of the elections, underscoring the challenges and disruptions in Nigeria’s electoral landscape since the country’s transition from military rule.
